INTERNATIONAL PHOR KUNE KUNG FU ASSOCIATION
FAQ'S
- Can beginners join the class?
Yes, beginners are very welcome to join our classes. In fact it is often easier for someone with no knowledge of Martial Arts to pick up our style than someone who has already been training in another style; as they have nothing to re-learn.
- What does the class involve?
Classes involve an initial warm-up and stretching exercises together with general fitness training. Following this everyone does basic techniques together and then later the class is divided into grades.
- Do I need to get fit first?
No, there is no need to be 'fit' as the training will progressively raise your fitness level.
- How often do I have to train?
Ideally a minimum of twice a week but as long as you can commit to once a week, supplemented with home practise that will be okay. You will be expected to do some training at home, especially stretching exercises.
- How much does it cost?
The first lesson is free and thereafter £7. per two hour lesson for seniors and £5. for under 16's.
- What should I wear?
T-shirt and jogging bottoms or similar and soft indoor shoes or trainers to begin with and then you will be required to purchase the club uniform once you have been accepted as a student of Phor Kune Kung Fu.
- What is the etiquette when I come along?
When entering the Kwoon (training hall) you are required to bow in the traditional Chinese way. Also when speaking to a senior member you would bow first and then the senior would bow in acknowledgment.
Basically it comes down to respect for the style, instructors and all members.
- Can you tell me about membership?
Membership is £30. per annum for over 16's and £20. for under 16's.
- How big are the classes?
Classes are small and therefore all practitioners receive personal instruction.
- Is there an age limit?
There is no age limit, however, we do not normally take children under 7 years of age.
- Is there a grading system?
Yes. Beginners will commence at 11th Grade and work their way to 1st Grade. During this period a Red Sash is worn. Once you have passed your 1st Grade you will be awarded your Black Sash. From here you develop your skills even further, progressing from 1st Degree upwards.
- Will the class involve contact?
As with any Martial Art there will be physical contact with other participants.
However, contact is controlled and as the student progresses through the grading system, the contact will become harder but still controlled.
